Ingrown Toenail

foot and ankleIn our experience, with the foot and ankle, we witness children between 10 and 14 experience heel pain as a result of inflammation of the growth plate at the back of the heel. The Achilles tendon, which is the largest and strongest tendon in the body, inserts into the back of the heel bone, just behind the growth plate. Kids in track, soccer, and gymnastics will often develop this condition, known as “Sever’s disease”.

Foot and Ankle Problems in Georgia Sports

In addition, Podiatry Group of Georgia points out that runners and those frequently walking on a treadmill can both develop a stress fracture. This occurs when someone abruptly increases their mileage or number of times per week they are exercising. A stress fracture is usually an overuse type of injury that produces acute bone swelling leading to a crack in the bone. They are treated with a period of non-weight bearing to the affected area, and usually require crutches and a cast or cast boot until the bone heals.

Tendinitis can develop with an increase in mileage or with any repetitive activity. In the foot and ankle, we see tendonitis develop in the Achilles tendon, or on the inside or outside of the ankle depending on the foot type and mechanics. If you have an area of your ankle that swells up with activity, and becomes sore, you probably have a case of tendonitis. Controlling foot mechanics with the proper shoes and arch supports can often prevent or be used to treat a case of tendonitis.

Foot and Ankle Problems- Prevention

There are a lot of things you can do to prevent injuries such as stretching your foot and ankle before and after exercising. Finding the right shoes is important as well. When beginning an exercise program, make sure you start out slowly. If you have flat arches, it is wise to purchase arch supports or orthotics sized for your needs. Whenever you experience any type of pain, ice the area or seek medical help if it remains.

It is important to not ignore any pain you might experience, it can develop into a bigger problem. Contact us if you have any questions or feel you need treatement.

How to Determine Your Foot Type for Running ShoesRunning Shoes

Podiatry Group of Georgia explains how to purchase the correct type of running shoes.  Initially, one should determine what kind of feet you have.  To determine this, you can go to a store that specializes in running shoe apparel or you can pursue it on your own.  One way is to scrutinize your footprint by either running in the sand or on paper with wet feet.

To begin, there are three types of feet.

Running Shoes for Flat Feet

Flat feet is when you look at your feet and do not notice any type if arch. From your toes to your heel on the bottom is entirely flat. In other words, an inward curve is not visible from your big toe to your heel.  Being flat-footed translates into being an overpronator in that your feet roll inward when you run. To compensate for this, this type of runner requires shoes that provide stability and some need custom made shoes (orthotics).

Running Shoes for High-arched Feet

High-arched feet is when you notice a high and definite arch on your foot. On you print test, it will curve inward causing the middle part of your foot appear skinny. Also, if you apply pressure against the bottom your foot, your arch will stay rigid. By having high-arched feet means that this person supinate or underpronate which causes your feet to roll outwards when you run. Over time the arches will collapse somewhat with runners making their feet longer. This type of runner requires flexible running shoes with a soft midsole a so as to absorb shock.

Running Shoes for Normal Feet

If you have normal feet which are neither flat-footed nor high-arched, you will notice a curve inward but not exceeding ¾ of an inch. When purchasing shoes, there is an extensive variety but stay away from running shoes that have excessive stability or motion control.

Invest in Running ShoesRecently in our blog, we discussed different common foot problems that people suffer from. While some people are prone to certain foot problems and others are due to natural causes, many of the foot problems people experience develop from wearing incorrect fitting footwear. Problems such as bunions or hammertoes develop slowly over time and are often the result of years of wearing restrictive footwear. As your local foot specialist in Marietta, we are going to go over how to select the right running shoe for your foot.

If you maintain an active lifestyle and spend a lot of time exercising, whether that is running or walking, it is imperative that you have the right shoes for the job. Not only do the correct shoes help improve your performance but they also help protect your feet, as well as the rest of your body. Your feet bear all of your body weight, plus some. So, how you carry and support your body weight has a direct effect on other parts of your body.

In order to choose the right running shoe, you first need to know what kind of feet you have. Are they flat, normal, or do you have a high arch? These are all questions you should be asking yourself. You can typically examine your foot and its arch to answer these questions. If you have flat feet, meaning you have no arch, it is very probable that your foot rolls inward when you walk or run. You will need to invest in a running shoe that offers your foot support and stability so it does not continue to roll inwards. High arched feet tend to roll outward when you walk or run. In this case, you will need to look for running shoes that have a soft, absorbent mid sole to help prevent your foot from rolling outward.

It is always a good idea to work with a salesperson when you are searching for the right running shoes. You will want to work with someone who is knowledgeable about what kinds of shoes best fit different kinds of feet. The right shoe can help prevent a multitude of problems down the road so, take the time to invest in your feet now.

Foot pain is not normal and depending on the severity, it can be debilitating. From athlete’s foot to bunions, there is no condition or ailment that seems small. Your feet are truly amazing parts of your body that are capable of bearing unimaginable amounts of weight. So, any kind of pain or affliction is only magnified. As your local podiatrist in Marietta, we are familiar with a number of different foot conditions. Whether they are caused by ill fitting footwear or by another condition, we are here to help relieve our patients of these common problems and to help them get back to their daily runs.

  1. Bunions- If you keep up with our blogs, you know that we recently discussed bunions and how they form. However, for those of you who missed our last blog, bunions are unnatural bony bumps that form at the base of the toe (typically the big toe). This hump causes the toe to deviate towards the other toes causing the other joint to protrude outwards. Bunions can be very painful and often require surgery to fix. Many times, they are the result of years of wearing shoes that are too tight or narrow.

  2. Hammertoe- According to WebMD, while some people are more prone to hammertoe, it is another common foot problem that could be potentially caused by tight footwear. Hammertoe causes the toe’s middle joint to bend downward which, causes the toe to appear as if it raised near the base of the foot. This is another condition that sometimes requires surgery to fix.

  3. Gout- Gout is a form of arthritis that usually forms in the large joint of the big toe. It is formed by too much uric acid in the body, which then forms hard crystals in the joint. Gout can be very painful and can also cause swelling and stiffness in the foot.

No matter the problem, the doctors at the Podiatry Group of Georgia can help. You do not have to live with foot pain. Let our doctors help you start enjoying those morning runs or evening walks again.

Marietta Bunion TreatmentDisorders or complications with the feet can be incredibly painful and debilitating. Unfortunately, almost ¾ of Americans will suffer from some kind of foot problem within  their lifetime. Bunions can run in the family. Foot problems can vary but one common problem many people experience is the development of bunions. Feet They carry you from here to there every day. But you may not think much about them until they hurt.

According to WebMD, a bunion is an unnatural bony hump that forms at the base of toe, where it connects to the foot. This most often occurs on the big toe and it typically deviates towards the other toes. This, in turn, pushes out on the first metatarsal bone, forming a bunion. Sometimes the little toe can deviate and push out on the fifth metatarsal. When this occurs this is known as a bunionette. Bunions can be extremely painful because they form at the joint, which bears all of our weight when we walk. Bunions, like many other foot problems, begin to form and develop in early adulthood and then progressively get worse. Poor foot structure can lead to their development as well as wearing shoes are too tight or restrictive. Women are especially prone to developing bunions due to years of wearing high heels and pointed shoes. These type of shoes slowly cause feet to develop an unnatural shape.

Foot pain, no matter how mild, is not natural. If you are experiencing pain or noticing a change in your feet you should seek medical care right away. Early care can help prevent the condition from worsening. If you suffer from bunions and they are extremely painful, surgery may be a viable option for you. We offer surgical treatments, including bunions surgery, to Marietta residents.
